Powerline posted a statement from her yesterday, which ended with this:

I believe the segment presented to the American people facts they were free to accept or reject, and that as those facts were presented, there was nothing that was false or misleading. I am heartened to see that the panel found no political bias on my part, as indeed I have none. For 25 years, I have built a reputation as a fair, honest and thorough journalist. I have had 15 wonderful years at CBS News and four very bad months. I love and respect the people there and I wish them every good fortune.

See, that’s the problem with these people. And the fact that she’s a journalist (or used to be, or wants to be, or thinks she is, or whatever) just compounds the problem. Facts are facts. You cannot choose to accept or reject them. Pick and choose whatever suits your needs. Facts are true, and “truth has a certain ring to it.” Anything else is opinion, conjecture. Facts cannot be molded to suit your desires. If you choose to withhold facts, you withhold information, and if you’re a reporter, withholding of facts is a betrayal of your profession.

I’m sick and tired of reading about “facts” in one publication, then a completely different set of “facts” proving the opposite in another. What happened to science? What happened to truth? Why are people so afraid of it? How could any remotely decent person think that about facts? That it’s possible to pick through it till you find something that suits your mood? No wonder education is such crap in this country, if the truth is subjective, and opinion is sacrosanct.
