Reuters - Newsweek says Koran desecration report is wrong

The report sparked angry and violent protests across the Muslim world from Afghanistan, where 16 were killed and more than 100 injured, to Pakistan to Indonesia to Gaza. In the past week it was condemned in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and by the Arab League.

On Sunday, Afghan Muslim clerics threatened to call for a holy war against the United States.

Okay, I see how Newsweek could have done that, but it amounts to the sort of “sexing up” that everyone jumped all over Blair for back before the Hutton Inquiry. So whoever wrote that thing needs to be fired. Or moved to the photo desk. Or something. It’s ridiculously irresponsible and crappy journalism. He should go write a novel if he wants salacious conspiracy theories.

But what about the people that killed people and hurt people during their rioting? Can you imagine Christians getting upset over a Bible being torn up? Hell, Christians are oppressed all over the muslim world. And so far, no riots. So how about the rioters get up and apologize for causing that much damage over five incorrect words? These are adults, for crying out loud. Why can’t they act like it. Why do we have to continue to tiptoe around them and treat them like we’re the help and they’re the spoilt children?

Update: Okay, the thing that really pisses me off about this whole thing, is that the press (and democrats) are never going to get it through their thick heads that people read this crap. It’s not just swayable Bush voters. It pisses me off when I see Iraqi bloggers quoting that Cole or Coleman guy that writes for the Strib as God’s honest truth, when anyone in this country knows what he’s doing. Or when people in the country we invaded start picking up on the “Bush did it for oil! This important American Congressman said so! So he must be telling the truth!” If they’re going to play stupid childish games, I wish they’d do it at dinner parties, and stop treating us and the rest of the world like pawns.

Glenn:

These guys don’t understand the difference between covering a minor domestic “gotcha” story and national security matters. To them, there isn’t a difference. If they’re that clueless, it’s no surprise that they don’t know how to respond when they’re caught.

Update II:

From Daly Thoughts, via Michelle Malkin:

However, I think it is even more important that it serves as a reminder of one of the things we are fighting against– a dysfunctional culture that thinks that violence and murder is an acceptable response to being offended (among other things).

Update II:

Baldilocks:

Publishing a report on an unverified desecration of Islam’s holy scripture was merely a tool meant to undermine the military’s mission in the War on Terror(ists) and thereby discredit the war’s author, the president. But like many tools wielded by unskilled “warriors,” it missed the mark and hit the wrong targets: at least 15 Afghanis, now dead.

Nice shooting, clowns.

and:

Note to those who are blowing the intentions of the “religious right” out of proportion: if Christians were to riot the next time some so-called artist puts a crucifix in a bucket full of urine, that would be religious extremism and then it would be time to worry about Christians. Wake me when it happens.
