Oh god I HATE people like that. A friend of my mother's commutes from Sacramento. Literally. I forget where exactly she works but suffice it to say it's somewhere between the Benicia and Golden Gate Bridges by way of San Jose.

Talk about all the worst reasons to buy a house, though. It's not like he'd ever see it in the day time or have enough energy to enjoy it on the weekends. But a friend of mine in high school lived waaaay out in the Morgan Hill boondocks. Took her a half hour almost just to get to 101, then her mom would drop her off at Saint Francis on her way to her job at Moffett/NASA. But her dad liked being a minimum of a couple miles from his nearest (militia) neighbors. So whatever.

I don't think any of them converted. This was just a story I was reading about one of the girls, youngish, between 10 and 15, I think, and she didn't tell anyone till they got to California and all of a sudden she was looking up priests and her family flipped out. But I just thought it was a really funny. And it stuck in my head.

Poor Hollister, though. I'd hate it if San Juan Bautista turned into a bedroom community. Yelch. A wife of another friend of mine works for the water company and apparently they're building all those developments way down 101 in South South South San Jose and there's no water so they literally have to purify sewage for them. How retarded and btw unsustainable is that.

I don't know if they converted? Back then San Jose was the next biggest Mormon town in competition with Salt Lake City for preeminence - the News about them was Big Stuff, and maybe they just had to get away from SJ to escape the notoriety.

Because of the exceptionally high cost of housing here, Hollister has grown like crazy and turned into a bedroom community for Bay Area commuters. True Story: I worked with a guy who drove up and back each day from Hollister to Fremont (116-mile round trip), because only there could he afford a 3-bedroom dream house with a yard and all. But all the stress from driving in heavy traffic and congestion was making him too-intense, aggressive, and paranoid. He got frequent speeding tickets and was in near-accident situations. Just driving to get lunch he thought people in other vehicles were racing him. He mentioned that he had knocked-off another car's side mirror, while zipping ahead between lanes in traffic! Whoa - he thought he was some kind of road-warrior - I thought he was a maniac.

Yeah it was really lovely there. We sat at this outdoor restaurant for lunch and it was just lovely in the shade with the breeze. Almost too chilly. Then in the sun, oof.

I didn't know that about the Donner Party. I remember from back when in school that one of the girls made a promise to god that if she survived she'd convert to Catholicism, which I just thought was hysterical. So maybe a Spanish mission town made sense for some of the others that were just so overcome with thanks...?

The only think I know about Hollister is that I think they have a football team we used to play in high school.

That's a neat old church, and the town located ideally at the confluence of the two or three canyons to get a bit of both the sea and mountain breezes. Interesting to note that some of the Donner Party survivors wound up settling in San Juan there. Hollister Hills, where we go dirt-bike riding, is right over the other side of Fremont Peak.
