The Telegraph’s Simon Heffner, fifth item:

Bishop should learn to beat about the bush

Talking of cultural clashes, what could have given more innocent happiness this week than the spectacle of the Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt Rev John Gladwin, being abandoned in the Kenyan bush by his Anglican hosts for expressing his militant support for homosexual rights?

The nice Third World people, to whom the Church is usually so keen to suck up, have a very literal interpretation of the Bible on these matters, and are opposed to homosexual rights with an identical degree of militancy. The bishop had a party of 20 curates with him on a mission to “deepen their experience”.

If they’ve learnt that patronising the locals by inflicting trendy, self-serving views on them is a bad idea, the trip will have been worthwhile.

It’s lovely.
