Poor Solitary Socceroo
I just find this unbearably sweet:
SMH - A victim - but one day a king
HIS coach said it wasn’t a penalty. His teammates insist it wasn’t a penalty. And more than 20,000 of his fans, watching the game live at Kaiserslautern or at one of the many Fanfest sites round Germany will always believe it wasn’t a penalty.
But almost 20 hours after his last-minute tackle effectively gifted yesterday’s game to Italy and ended Australia’s World Cup campaign, Lucas Neill remained inconsolable.
Awww!
The Socceroos’ Dutch coach, Guus Hiddink… said Neill had cut a forlorn figure in the locker room after the game: “You always feel guilty if you have given away a penalty, but in his case, it was so bitter not having committed a foul. He was not totally out of control, but he was quiet and sitting in a corner.”
Poor guy!

OK, Oz is out, Ghana was rolled over by Brazil, as expected, so the time has come to draw out the name of the next team, still in the competition, to support. And the winner is….. France!
Any sport afficionado will know that the French play sport (Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, whatever) in the most gallant manner, with flair and artistry. Good selection!

The only thing is that they’re looking just so tired. They’re lousy at golf, and as for cricket….

Yes, they will need a good rest before the next game. v Brazil. French play cricket?
I got into a taxi in Philadelphia a few years ago, and the driver asked where I was from after hearing my accent. Australia. Oohh. Dennis Lillee! Jeff Thompson! He played in an ex-pat West Indian competition on the east coast.

Wisden does actually have a short article about cricket in France each year. Expats. Pity they don’t play it in the banlieus, life would be simpler all round. It’s always great when you get heroes mentioned out of context - having a Brazilian in 1970 in the US talk about Bobbies Charlton and Moore while I talked about Pele and Rivelino and everyone else looked blank - well, that was fun. Who was the Frog who went for a paddle at carnoustie a few years back. Beaucoup hilarieux, you can’t win a Major with wet feet.

Believe it or not, France are to play Scotland in the European (cricket) Cup. Scotland’ll be favourites!

Ooh that’ll be fun. Cricket introduced to these shores by our South Asian cab drivers. And 7/11 owners.
Well, I was going to support Italy for Peter’s sake but I can switch to France. Makes better sense for myself, anyway.

“The Prologue”? Frankie Howerd in “Up Pompeii”? Great fun. Was allowed to watch it because I was reading Plautus for A level. Sheer filth. Great!

I was curious how you knew that ISBN number so quickly.
