There is certainlly a strong suspicion in my mind that the suspect was targeting Jews but it is not as clear-cut as the Seattle shooting.

Thanks for the info Gary. Walk the sidewalks of San Francsico secure in the knowledge that this was just a random nut case with nothing specific in mind for Jewish people. We thought much the same way in Seattle until last month.

I am Jewish, lived for a long time in SF not far from this area and am very familiar with it. I would definitely not call the area "heavily Jewish", but on the other hand the SFJCC is one of the most prominent Jewish landmarks in the SF Bay Area. Also I should note that according to a report on KTVU, at least one of the SF victims is black and apparently the suspect tried to run him down twice. The area where most of the SF injuries took place is called the "upper Fillmore". It used to be predominantly black but is now somewhat yuppified. Note also that SF is compact and densely populated and as such the neighborhoods can change character very rapidly. Just a few blocks from here is the fabulously wealthy Presidio Heights area - the SFJCC is in fact about equidistant from the two neighborhoods; we're only talking about the space of a few blocks here.

Nevertheless it is an interesting question as to why, after already killing someone in Fremont, the suspect chose to drive 40 miles through heavy freeway traffic and then a few more miles through heavy city traffic to end up in this particular place.
