Rove Strikes! II
And the worst of it is, he doesn’t even know it’s Rove’s fault! He’s gone out and blamed Rush Limbaugh for it!
Update (11.1):

The pathetic thing is, I actually believe him when he says he only meant it as a joke about George Bush. When I first heard what he’d said, I thought to myself, “He means Bush.” This was Kerry’s version of Bush’s winning self-deprecating commencement remark about what can happen to “C” students.
Honest to Betsy: has there ever-ever-ever been such a tin-eared politician?

Eh, I don’t think so. I think it’s the same as how liberals think of religious people “Only the ignorant could believe in God” and republicans “Only the ignorant could vote for that guy”. “Only a moron could put his life on the line for this war.” The only deviation from that theme is “Only an evil bastard could be religious because he wants to stone gay people and kill Africans/vote for that guy because he wants to starve babies and freeze the elderly to death/join the army because he likes to shoot at brown people and torture women and children generally.”
It’s why they have the attitude they do towards the “enemy”. They’re ignorant. Once they’ve seen how wonderful the secular left life is, they’ll stop blowing people up. If only Bush would stop making things worse for long enough that they could see what the alternative is. But then when you have people blowing things up in secular-left France and Belgium, well it’s because of Bush and the Jooos. If only Bush and the Jooos would stop it, they’d be able to see the wonders of the secular left life.

I won’t press the point –it’s only an intuition–based on Kerry’s complete lack of a sense of humor. He’s forever cracking jokes and one-liners that are leaden and awkward like that. But dear Lord –presuming for 2 seconds that my intuition is right–if you make a gaffe like that and your story is it was a joke gone wrong –then what on earth would keep you from saying:I’m so sorry –that wasn’t what I meant at all –I’m so grateful for the service of our military men and women?
Of course you’re correct on the larger matter of how our elites think, and the longer Kerry goes to the mat for his comment, the more he will persuade people your interpretation is right.
Boy. First Mark Warner inexplicably withdraws, now Kerry makes himself unelectable. What magic is in Hillary?

May I suggest a Lurch outfit for putting the wind up your dimicrat neighbours this Halloween?

Oops, too late. I was travelling today. Damn!

A guy with a face and a voice like Kerry should leave the jokes to others. He’s a natural born straight man.

Lurch (the original) was the ultimate “straight man”.

Exactly, ninme! A small, childish and possibly suicidal part of me wanted Kerry to win in 04, just to see how he´d get eaten for breakfast by world leaders of both the refined and not-so-refined sort. Amazing how people who pride themselves on their education and openmindedness can be so parochial.

Well, wf, he’d spent so much time contemplating the wonder of being John Kerry couldn’t really be expected to know all that much about anything else - including the sort of joke that people take as insults.
And he’s still refusing to apologise!! I can’t believe it!

I don’t think he’s made himself unelectable. The magic in Hillary, I mean…
Okay, this is one of those things that makes me look around in wonder and ask myself, “Am I the only person with a memory left in the world?” Do we not remember when they moved out of the White House carrying off half the furniture? The precise quote of Rush Limbaugh’s (or almost (I don’t have perfect verbal recall)) was “Well this puts an end to her Presidential hopes.” And yet here we are. The people forgot about it, the press forgot about it, even Rush forgot about it. And all she had to do was keep her mouth largely shut for a few years.
Kerry won’t get nominated again not because of this but because he’s pissed off too many of his friends by making such a fool of himself last time, when they were all so spectacularly hitched to his wagon.

I just meant I think she’s stalking her rivals and taking ‘em out one by one.

Ah… So you think Rove’s a double agent?
It’s a sound theory. Of all the people he could bump off with a minimum of effort, he hasn’t touched her.
Or maybe he’s just saving the best for last?
