As a rule of thumb, if I know something it's probably common knowledge.
I'm not a Civil War buff, but the Shelby Foote trilogy certainly goes with a swing. Bet Half's read it. Bobby Lee was awful good at generalling, you know. And people just loved Traveler, his horse.

I thought they did -- oh you're right! I can't believe I missed that... I've been to the house, it's quite lovely.

I heard the other week that The Saturday Evening Post said authoritatively in the 40s or 50s referring to A Christmas Carol that Charles Dickens taught the English how to celebrate Christmas (with the goose and the good will).

I'm surprised the editors didn't catch it. I would have thought it fairly common knowledge, especially since, if you look at it logically, Jefferson Davis did sort of disappear because no one cared about him enough to do anything about him, yet Arlington is a big museum dedicated to its former owner, and people still write books about Lee and think very highly of him.

I thought it was Robert E Lee who had the vast estate at Arlington, not Jeff Davis, who was I think from Mississippi, not Virginia.
I hate it when we Brits get that sort of thing wrong, we're always so keen to sneer at ill-educated Americans.

Nope, not gonna brng peace to Iraq. The good news is that for the last 22.5 hours O2 theft has slightly decreased and oddly enough no further use of nerve gas was noted in Kurdistan today.
