Ah, but you don't use the limes, just the leaves. So all I have to do is keep it from dying. Which, granted, is a risky proposition. But I've kept more things alive (several) than have born fruit (none, not even the strawberries).

Not just limes: Kaffir limes. A necessary Thai ingredient. By moving it indoors in the winter and generally keeping it sun-drenched, I hope to keep it happy. I tried planting lemongrass seeds but I don't think they took. But I love thai and Vietnamese food, but I'm sick of always having to make the few recipes stuffed with coconut milk (not that I have anything against coconut milk, but it's not the most slenderizing thing in the world) because I can't lay my hands on all the friggin' herbs you need. Because either it's coconut milk or else it's about fifteen kinds of herbs. So, once I have that ironed out, culinary victory shall be mine!

BTW limes? In Washington? Sounds like Apples in Tallahassee..... which we did. I gifted my Mom 2 apples trees back in.. um... about 1975, weaklings, never liked the climate at all. Still each Spring they were fun to root for. Each blossom was like some damn alien visitor, all new growth was a new mystery. Best 12 dollars I ever spent.

Dad finally cut them down 2 years ago, he's gotten too old to properly worry about them.

But I don't want my poor baby limes caught in the cross-fire.

Woah I totally just had an image of a miniature WWII battle viewed from above with little birds throwing grenades and rockets at each other over my strawberries and palm tree. Fun.
