So Pretty!
We went and saw Pirates today. Went for a coffee and brioche at the Market then the 11.30 matinee. $10 bucks for both of us, baby. Sure it’s long, but we packed a snack. The plot’s labyrinthian, but I didn’t have any problem following who was saving whom, and part of the confusion’s supposed to be confusing, that’s what makes it funny. It’s all good fun. Especially if you pack a snack.
But enough about that. We saw a preview for The Golden Compass, and Nicole Kidman’s just so pretty! Peter sort of had to peel himself off the floor he was so awed by the visuals, but I was excited about Nicole Kidman. And Eva Green and Daniel Craig being in a movie together again (how many James Bonds did anything else with THEIR Bond Girls, huh? Plenty O’Toole? I doubt it.), and the kid looks awesome. But ah, she’s so pretty. Peter was getting annoyed with me saying so all the way home, too.

I know, it’s weird, isn’t it? And she’s a total unknown, too. “Discovered”, just for this movie. At first I thought she was a sister (she looks like someone though doesn’t she?) when her name flashed up but then I thought “Wait why would parents give their kids the same first name but different last names.” You see how I think these things through?

Packing a snack to the movies is always good advice, saves money. I usually stash a couple cans of Vienna Sausage and maybe a pickled eck or 2, a pint of Mott’s Clammato juice and an emergency potato.

Mmm sausages. We had sausages for dinner sunday night. Mmmm. Thing is, they’d be kind of stinky in a theater.

A combox bleg: has anyone read the trilogy The Golden Compass is part one of? Since the tyrannous government is “the Magisterium” in the books, it’s obvious the Christian press is going to go nuts in a few months when the movie comes out (even though the director apparently is excising the religious themes). Interestingly, however, the “chapels” are actually laboratories, so the books could be a critique of modern science. Anyone know? Ideally I’d like someone whose judgment I trust to opine so I don’t have to read any 2nd rate kids’ novels –these are said to be not as good as Harry Potter.

Well, Peter announced when I wikied it and confirmed that it is, indeed, an adaptation of a book, “I think I might actually read a book.” I found the bit about how they were taking the religion out of it and reacted rather strongly to that (it’s apparently one of the main themes, but then was surprised to read on that it was anti-religious sort of stuff that they were taking out (it’s still one of the main themes so I’m not sure how well anything holds up when you saw off its legs but anyway)) so I read out loud the line ‘However, Weitz attempted to reassure fans by saying that religion would appear in euphemistic terms. He also indicated that he believes His Dark Materials is “not an atheistic work, but a highly spiritual and reverent piece of writing”‘ and Peter said “Now I really might read a book!”
At any rate, if we do get it I’ll write it up.
