My beans, however, are not recovering so well. I’m going to go try a spot of pruning and see what I can do for them.

I hope that’s not a side-shoot you’re growing in pic 1, centre-right!

Um… well there’s the green support hoop center right… Other than that it’s all tomato plant. Why am I doing something wrong?!

Side-shoots are the secondary shoots that grow in the angle between the main stem and the main branches/leaves. They are anathema to commercial growers because they take feed that would otherwise go to bulking out the fruit, and they also result in a bushy, all-over-the-place laid-back sort of plant that’s less handy to cultivate than one that’s neatly supported by a piece of string. I did my first side-shooting at the age of four. The smell of tomatoes is my madeleine, as it were.

Madeleine as in the little cakes? I’m obsessed with the smell of tomato plants. Mmmmm.
Wait so side-shoots… Oh I think I see what you mean. You’re sure those won’t end up with fruit on them or anything? Maybe I should get the camera out to make sure we’re talking about the same thing…

They will carry fruit on the trusses (the bits that flower) but the fruit’ll be smaller. A son gout, as it were. Yes, madeleines as in the cake that brought it all back to M. Proust.

Called suckers on tobacco plants. Yeah, I’ve done my time removing them.

I’m so impressed that when confronted by the word “madeleines”, ninme thinks first of the little cakes, and then of Proust. That’s the right way round to be.

Woah I didn’t think of Proust, you did. I don’t know the least little thing about Proust. So you do mean the little cakes? Did they bring it all back to Proust, then? Hmm. You should watch Ratatouille. Mmmmm…

There’s a faux-French bistro chain over here called La Madeleine that doesn’t serve madeleines. Seems wrong.
ninme, congratulations on the tomato-blogging. I’m so proud.

I’m a-gettin’ there!
