Oz, You’re Making Me Very, Very Nervous
Telegraph - Australia could drop Queen as head of state
The Queen could be dropped as Australia’s head of state within three years under plans drawn up by the man tipped to be the country’s next prime minister.
Labour Party leader Kevin Rudd is surging ahead in the polls and is expected to deliver a humiliating defeat to the government of prime minister John Howard at an election due within weeks.
A staunch republican, Mr Rudd wants Australia to cut its constitutional ties with Britain, replacing the Queen with an elected president.
Augh! Why?!

I stopped reading papers when they started making up stories based on opinion polls.

If this is true and Labor go in with this policy for the election, (1) they’ll lose handily and (2) I wonder which flag they will stand patriotically in front of for election photo shoots?

I’d be careful about this. You could throw away the entire history of your country. The US did this in 1776 and is only now recovering the vital history infrastructure a monarch brings.

Yeah no kiddin’.
But but… why?!?!

Why? Well, the previous (Labor) government tried this many years ago. Presumably they just thought they’d be able to muddle it through without people really asking too many questions - asking “Why?” for example - but they were wrong. People did ask why and wanted the details of the proposal, and it suddenly didn’t look such a great idea.
As to the reason “why”, well, why does Hillary want to socialize health care?

Well, because she craves power and looks down on normal people in the worst and most patronizing way imaginable.
But to cut off one’s whole country from the queen…

A propos Half’s comment, once you get rid of the monarchy you have to re-write or re-invent enough history to ensure that no-one quite knows what really happened. They did that in both the USA and France. Still living with the consequences.
