		<description>&lt;p&gt;It would have been nice, when Britain was fighting for survival, if the United States hadn't made the defence of freedom a matter of personal choice.
As someone who takes no pride whatever in the bit of Irish ancestry I'm stuck with, can I just say that de Valera's decision to remain neutral in the fight against Nazism will live in ignominy for centuries to come.
At the height of the Troubles the Irish regiments of the British Army were each year recruiting 50 times the number of men out of Dublin alone than the IRA, not to mention Cork, Limerick, Belfast etc. I once had the pleasure of talking with an RSM in the Irish Guards who talked a lot of sense about how the sectarian business had never been part of the regiment, but that all the regiment, Catholic ot Protestant, were utterly in awe of the courage of the Catholic chaplains, who frequently got themselves into scrapes they didn't have to, serving their men.&lt;/p&gt;
