Now, granted, I don’t run into a lot of American editorial cartoons anymore, but there’s a reason for that: they’re not very good (artistically and message-wise). These are really, really good.

That is fascinating.
I’ve always had an inkling that the fevered fanatasicsm we see is a sort of last gasp. Is there a cartoon-led revolution in the making?

Well, gasp maybe, but not necessarily the last one. Sarajevo was a pretty swinging place before it turned into the longest siege in the history of modern warfare. Beirut was the Paris of the East or whatever it was called and then the 80s happened. People come out of civilization very easily.
