Physics For Beach Bums
A New Zealand college student has created what can only be described as the most important beverage-related invention ever.
Tired of lugging an ice chest to the beach with his mates, 22-year old student Kent Hodgson, created a portable device that cools beer in a matter of moments.
The Huski utilizes a pen-sized plastic cooling cell that is placed in a dock. The dock is filled with pressurized liquid CO2, which expands to create dry ice in the cooling cell. The cell is then dropped into a beer bottle and, voila, you have yourself a frosty beverage!
Dude, lookit his picture. Cute little science nerd!
(TMZ says he’ll sell it for 50 bucks, but the NZ Herald article says 50 bucks, so, and disregarding the state of the American dollar (lawd we’re still better than the $NZ at least)…?)

I saw this on an Australian inventors show 20 years ago, but it was built into the can. Pulling the ring tab expelled the CO2 and chilled the beer. Never got into production, though. If one were organised enough to buy self-chilling beer cans one would probably remember to bring an eskie. This stand-alone chiller should fair a bit better.

In this country they went for nitrogen rather than CO2, which meant that the beer had a hand-pulled effect head to it, but was still warm. They called it “the widget”. Can’t say I was too proud of my (minor) role in its marketing.

Dang GMTA! I thought that was my idea.
I currently use canned computer cleaning air.

And yes, I was certain this was going to be about the Hawaian Surfer Dude who’s come up with testable unified field theory.

Guinness uses little widgets, but not to make it cold.
