Times Online - Labor Party wins Australian election
Australia’s long-serving conservative government not only lost yesterday’s Australian election but its leader, John Howard, became only the second Prime Minister in Australia’s history to lose his seat in Parliament.
Unbelievable.
Update:
The NYT (link to LGF, cuz I ain’t linkin’ to the NYT):
Mr. Howard’s defeat, after 11 years in power, follows that of José María Aznar of Spain, who also backed the United States-led invasion of Iraq, and political setbacks for Tony Blair of Britain.
José Maria Aznar: April 2004.
John Howard: November 2007.
So they have to go back 43 months, but it’s a veritable massacre of Bush allies! Let’s just see, have there been any other elections in the interim? There’s been Germany, in November 2005; Poland, in December 2005; Canada, in February 2006, Mexico, in December 2006; and France in May 2007, and they all, as far as I know, elected Bush allies. Funny.
(They left out Italy so I will too.)
Update II:
This isn’t the most obvious place to put this article, but I just thought, in case anyone needed convincing the level of conceit in this country, I’d put it here:

He lost the seat because of a “hostile” re-distribution (re-drawing of boundaries of his electorate) about a year ago. One of Australia’s leading industrialists, Charles Copeman, stood up during question time at the Mark Steyn talk in Sydney and, rather than ask a question, made a statement about that particular re-distribution so that it would be brought to public attention (the media steadfastly ignored it of course). He called it disgraceful.

Howard is a great man. As for the other countries, I don´t know about allies, but there has certainly been a return to sanity. It usually helps being right on the big issues.
