I mean thank-you, I don't get much exposure to Macleans.
I've heard that in Africa as soon as someone puts up telephone wires somebody climbs the pole and rolls 'em up for the copper - so they're leapfrogging land-lines which were never very reliable to cellular service. Whether they can maintain that is another problem.

Red: God that's sad. You'd think man would be at least devoted to his car, if not any other part of his society.

Crashr: Eh, you're welcome? Unless you were talking to Red?

Half: Are you kidding?

South Africa is getting the football World Cup I think, next time, and everybody's been saying "Well, they're screwed, they'll never be ready in time, but at least this'll make them finally get the electricity running at least for the press booths if not for the stadium lights". But, uh, maybe there won't even be that silver lining?

Yep it's coming apart. South Africa is turning off the electricity to the (wait for it) goldmines.

There was a book published recently by a chap who'd spent time in the Congo - formerly known as Zaire. It's 20-odd years since the last trains ran, but there are still guys maintaining local stations. Old timers astonish children by reminiscing about the days when there used to be things called motor cars which could reach 70mph on the highways - which have gone as well.
