Tinsel Town Tops Three
Nominations! And I’m feeling pretty good about this year.
Best Picture: I’ve seen one of them (No Country for Old Men), really want to see another two (Atonement, Juno), and likely will see one of those (Juno) this weekend! Not bad!
Best Director: Seen one of them (No Country), want to see another one (Juno). Again, not bad!
Best Actor: I at least want to see one of them (Sweeney Todd). No, two (add Eastern Promises).
Best Actress: Want to see one (Ellen Page, Juno), and I’m a big fan of Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) and Julie Christie (Away from Her) though I don’t really feel like watching their movies. I imagine I’ll see one (Elizabeth) of them, but mostly for Cate and the costumes.
Best Supporting Actor: I’ve seen one (Javier Bardem, No Country) and I really want to see two more (Casey Affleck, Assassination of Jesse James… and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Charlie Wilson’s War), though one (Assassination) more than the other (Charlie Wilson).
Best Supporting Actress: I’ve seen one (Ruby Dee, American Gangster), want to see another one (Saoirse Ronan, Atonement), and I really like a third (Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton) though I have no interest in the movie.
Best Foreign Language Film: Haven’t seen any of them, but I’m sure the one from Kazakhstan should be interesting, especially after last year’s Kazakh Oscars Sweep (that’s a joke, refering to Borat).
Best Animated Feature Film: Well, Ratatouille. Only one I saw, want to see, have any interest in seeing, will see, or should see.
Screenplays, adapted and original: Who cares, they’re all on strike.
Best Music: Lots of songs from one I’ve seen (Enchanted). Though I didn’t think they were that good, I guess it’s so long since Disney’s actually written real songs rather than fake pop songs, it’s bound to happen…
Best Score: Seen one (Ratatouille), want to see two more (Atonement, The Kite Runner), and almost wanted to see another (3:10 to Yuma) before I found out the stupid changes they made to the story.
Best Documentaries: Who cares.
Best Effects: Seen all of them (Golden Compass, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers)!
Cinematography: I’ll never understand how this category differs from Director. Or, I do, but it’s a bit like the distinction between original and adapted screenplays. Just lets you give an Oscar to two different people.
Skipping to Best Costume Design: Um, haven’t actually seen any of them, but if I see one of them (Elizabeth), it’d be because of the costumes, so there’s that…
Skipping to Sound Editing, which otherwise I wouldn’t care about but will in this case because: I’ve seen four (Bourne Ultimatum, No Country, Ratatouille, Transformers) out of the five! Wow!
And that’s it. A pretty stellar year, all told. At least compared to previous years.
