Conversations at a Border Crossing
Peter, me, and the border guy, who sounded slightly New Yorkish. Timing punchy, businesslike, upbeat:
“Hi.” hands over passports
“Hi. [pause] ‘ninme’, could you take your sunglasses off.”
“Oh sorry.”
pause “How long were you in Canada?”
“Just for a weekend retreat since… Friday evening.”
“Are you bringing anything back with you?”
“Uhh [turns to me] we’re coming back with pretty much everything we came with right?”
“We have a tulip.”
“A tulip. Fabulous. Have a nice day.”

They also become all relaxed on hearing that one’s major activity in Canada was visiting the Hooters bars in Toronto and Niagara Falls.
