and I’ve never been on a long-distance train ride
Life's too short. Do it. And those were PullMans that LOL MM slept in. No longer in use. You want's a 2 person compartment even if Peter doesn't come along. Matter of fact long train trips are very much a solo deal. Avoid traveling across Kansas during your normal imbibing hours. Avoid Utah on Sundays.

The seats reclined so that you could sleep. I enjoyed the observation car and bar.

Brett'll know more about this than I do, but sleepers a la Monroe were arranged lenthwise, which made them a lot less bumpy than those on British trains, which are arranged across the cabin.

"North by Northwest" featured a lovely cabin.

Yeah I'd like to do that sometime when I have to go home by myself and can waste time at my leisure, but the thing is, lately I've been downright sickly, falling hideously ill every time I get on an airplane, or come near someone who's been on an airplane after a late night, and since I could never afford a berth, and I've never been on a long-distance train ride but I imagine the cheap seats are just that: seats, I'd probably just be signing myself over to a long and painful death-by-sore-throat.

What ever happened to those curtained-bed-things that Marilyn Monroe used to always sleep in in the movies? That's what I always thought train travel was like as a kid, then I watched a bunch of Hitchcock movies with the elaborate bedrooms and communicating doors, then there was Agatha Christie, then I got old enough to train-travel and never could, then I rewatched Some Like It Hot and was all, "Hey! Whataboutthat!?!"
